"Derrick Martin is a corner, and it's very hard to get corners on the 2nd day of the draft,"
said director of college scouting Eric DeCosta. "He's very, very athletic. You'll be hard-pressed to find a corner in this year's draft that tested better in Indy. He's got unbelievable feet and he's very fast. He can jump out of the building. He's very good when the play is in front. He's outstanding on special teams. He's a very good gunner. He's blocked kicks and with his size and speed, he's a tremendous value in the latter half of the 6th round."
He was drafted in the 2006 NFL draft in the 6th round out of Wyoming by the Baltimore Ravens. Martin is the 1st player in Ravens franchise history to be selected out of Wyoming."
- Derrick attended Thomas Jefferson (Denver, CO) HS.
- Derrick earned All Colorado and All-State Class 5A honors from the Denver Post as a senior.
- He was named the MVP of the Denver Prep 5A league as a senior and led his team to the quarterfinals of the 2001 state playoffs and to the 2002 state semifinals.
- Derrick compiled a 38-10 record and won 4 City Championships while playing QB and RB.
- As a senior, he completed 96 of 185 passes for 1,475 yards and 10 TDs, as well as rushing 138 times for 830 yards and 3 TDs.
- Martin also earned All-City honors and was the team captain as a point guard on the basketball team. Derrick was part of his schools 4x100 meter relay team that placed 6th in the State Championships during his junior year.
- Derrick was on the honor roll all 4 years at Thomas Jefferson as well as being named to the Mayor's Mile High Academic Scholar squad and earned Renaissance Academic Scholar honors 2 years.
- Versatile DB who can play both inside and outside.
- Totaled 134 tackles (92 solo), 21 PD, 6 INTs (1 returned for a TD), 3 FRs, 2 FFs and 2
sacks at Wyoming.
- Played in 30 games, starting 24 at Wyoming...He also returned 6 KOs for 135 yards
(22.5 avg.) and blocked 3 punts, returning 2 for TDs.
- Named All-Mountain West honorable mention as a junior in 2005, leading a defense
that finished 1st in the conference in pass defense (207.4 ypg).
- Posted 47 tackles, including 32 solo, 3.5 TFL and a sack (-6 yards). Also had 7 PD
and 3 INTs as a senior.
- Martin added a 26-yard KO return. 2004: Earned All-Mountain West Conference
2nd-team honors as a sophomore.
- Started all 12 games and finished 4th on the team with a career-high 60 tackles
(43 solo), 4.5 TFL and 1 sack (-10 yards).
- Martin led the team with a career-high 17 PD and returned 5 KOs for 109 yards
(21.8 avg.).
- Derrick finished 2nd on the team (9th in the MWC) with 3 INTs, which he returned
36 yards and scored on a blocked punt return (17 yards).
- Martin was named the National Defensive Player of the Week by the Bronko Nagurski
Award committee following his outstanding performance against Ole Miss on 9/25/04,
(as he posted a season-high 9 tackles, had a career-high 7 PD and had a spectacular,
diving INT in the end zone to thwart a potentially game-tying drive by the Rebels.)
- Had an immediate impact as a freshman, playing in 7 games, starting 4, finishing the
season with 27 tackles, including 17 solo and 2 FRs. Began his collegiate career with
a splash as he returned a blocked punt 6 yards for a TD in the season opener vs.
Montana State.
- Founded the Derrick Martin Foundation (in 2007), which improves lives of
underprivileged kids and single parent homes
- Derrick hosted the inaugural Derrick Martin Sportsfest in Denver, which included free
football and cheerleading clinics, a celebrity basketball game, celebrity bowling and a
silent auction in 2008, 2009, 2010, and is planning for 2011.
- Derrick started Martin's Martians, a program focused on physical activity,
setting goals, and sportsmanship, at The Howe Elementary School in Green Bay in
2010. He is actively involved in the program and is in the school twice a month.
- He also participated in the Ravens annual Spring Football Festival, signing autographs
and speaking at fan forums in April 2007 and '08
- In July 2007, Martin visited youth and participated in group activities at
Camp Shoresh in Federick MD
- Derrick, along with teammates Gerome Sapp and Jamaine Winborne, worked to
re-furbish a home for a Baltimore family with Santown Habitat for Humanity in
Sep. 2007
- In Nov. 2007, Martin participated in Autumn Harvest, teaming with 200 volunteers to
distribute food baskets to Baltimore families in need at M&T Bank Stadium
- Derrick joined teammate Bart Scott for Scott's holiday party for 200 Baltimore youth
at Port Discovery Museum in Baltimore; the evening featured a holiday meal, gift
distribution and bike giveaway
- Martin joined teammates in Nov. 2007 for the ACT Auction Party benefiting the RACTF
and players foundations
- In Nov. 2007, as part of teammate Bart Scott's Thanksgiving event, Derrick helped
serve Thanksgiving meals at the Helping Up Mission in Baltimore
- Derrick helped refurbish homes with Sandtown, MD Habitat for Humanity
in Sep. 2006.
- Participated with teammates, at Dick's Sporting Goods to provide the 16 young men
of Aunt Hattie's Place with $250 gift certificates in Dec. 2006
- Was a personal shopper at the 2nd Annual Holiday Helpers where teammates Derrick
Mason, Samari Rolle and Kyle Boller provided $150 gift certificates and helped
under-privileged children in the Baltimore area shop for holiday gifts for themselves
and their families in Dec. 2006.
